Jersey city global charter school1/20/2024 ![]() ![]() I absolutely take all the positive reviews with a grain of salt. This makes me think that Beloved must teach to the test and assign more busy homework - again, things good for a below average student body, but not exactly motivating for better students. But, my local school has horrible test scores and is ranked terribly. When looking at the student body breakup of my local school vs Beloved, I feel very my local school is better. That's higher than my local public school which has fallen from 77% to 71% in the same years. The free/discounted lunch % at Beloved has act been going up year after year, it's currently at 83% in 2014 vs 78% in 2013. When I look at the overwhelming positive review of beloved, I wonder how much is due to the lower standard.Ībsolutely agree. It could get very hot like in west windsor or north edison. When I look for school, I think I'm actually looking for similar parent peer group as interaction among them stimulate each other, pretty much like looking for job. It added to my concern originated from higher % of free/discount lunch. That makes me wonder if PTO engagement is widespread. The representative of AA is way below their fair share. But I realized that the people asking a lot of questions tend to be white or Asian. ![]() I can see African American take 40% of student body with 30% hispanic and some Asian and very few white. MrsPiggleWiggle, I visited beloved in open house introduction session. They have free early and late school care, so for the working family, it's essentially free babysitting with pickup and drop-off. The only attractive thing about Beloved/Empower schools is the busing system. I'm all for "diversity", but that's a little too much for me. at Beloved, the percentage of children on free lunch was almost 80%. It seemed like their focus was to keep the kids out of trouble by brute force. I've looked at Beloved and it seems to be a stereotypical urban charter school (think Camdem or something) in which the hours are really long and focus on discipline. The few good offerings have ridiculous lotteries that are almost impossible to get in. I'm also in Jersey City and the public/charter school offerings are abysmal. Anyone has thought on a charter school (elementary, middle) in bad neighbourhood (JC) vs public school in a very good neighbourhood (ie: west windsor, cranbury, princeton, north edison, etc)?Ībsolutely public school in a very good neighborhood. ![]()
